A steel engraving from Le Monde Illustré of 1885, showing the funeral of Admiral Courbet in his home town of Abbeville, is divided into 110 vertical rectangles, each of them exploded and presented consecutively from left to right and top to bottom in the same fashion as Michelin's Plan de Paris describes Paris. Amédée Courbet, a colonialist warrior seaman who died of cholera off the coast of Taïwan, is not related to Gustave Courbet. The blown-up fragments can easily be seen to represent wood planks and ocean waves.
